What is the size of the universe and its age?

The Challenge The universe is vast, but just how vast is it? How did it come into existence? Many have pondered these questions without reaching any conclusions. Now, it’s your turn to help. Your challenge is divided into three parts:
  1. Observation of the Universe: Use a telescope to create a gallery of galaxies far beyond our own Milky Way Galaxy.
  2. Telescope as a Time Machine: Using your photo gallery, estimate the distance to each galaxy.
  3. Report: Determine how long the light from these galaxies takes to reach Earth. What was happening on Earth when the light you captured left each of these galaxies?
The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula situated in the Milky Way, being south of Orion's Belt in the constellation of Orion
